When it comes to Madison Avenue's holy media trinity --- owned, earned and paid --- few agencies practice what they preach. Most try to earn media for themselves through PR, white papers and public speaking. Occasionally, an agency will pay to place a house ad, typically to boast about a big account or major awards win. But for all their talk about the ascendancy of "branded content," agencies rarely create media that they actually own on their own behalf. That's exactly what digital-savvy health and wellness shop CementBloc is doing with a new print and digital publication that makes a medium around the agency's core message of "convergent branding."
Free All Media plans to announce Tuesday a $650,000 private equity capital investment for FreeAllMusic.com. The service powers campaigns that tie digital rights management (DRM) free music downloads to brand ads on Facebook Fan pages. The app will soon support other social networks, too.
The industry self-regulatory group Digital Advertising Alliance on Monday issued new principles prohibiting companies from collecting any information about Web users in order to determine their eligibility for employment, credit, health care or insurance. The new principles are slated to take effect next year.
Gearing up to take on the iPad and Kindle Fire, Barnes & Noble on Monday unveiled its own tablet computer equipped with a faster, dual-core processor and double the storage and memory of the Nook Color. The extra firepower will help the 7-inch Nook Tablet power high-definition streaming video along with providing access to 2.5 million digital books, magazines and newspapers.
There's little question that mobile is a growing platform for Facebook. The social networking giant now says it has more than 350 million active monthly mobile users across 475 wireless operators worldwide. As such, mobile has also become an increasing focus for the company, which rolled out a major upgrade to its mobile site earlier this year and an iPad app in October.
DataXu will release the next generation of its digital marketing platform, DX3, to support advertisers through audience, inventory, campaign management, and analytics. The platform, which will launch Monday, allows marketers to optimize across profitable audience segments, media channels, and creative messages. DX3 combines demand-side platform (DSP) features with attribution management. It combines social, video, display and mobile, with search on the way.
Android continued to gobble up an ever-larger share of the U.S. smartphone market in the third quarter. For the three months ending in September, the Google mobile platform powered on average nearly 45% of U.S. smartphones -- up 4.6 percentage points from June, according to comScore. Other mobile operating systems were either roughly flat or lost share during the period.
Two lawmakers said today that Verizon Wireless should obtain consumers' explicit permission before forging ahead with new marketing initiatives that involve sharing users' data. "While we understand the benefits of tailoring advertising to customers, we strongly believe that customers should be in control of the sharing and disclosure of their personal information through an opt-in process," Reps. Ed Markey (D-Mass) and Joe Barton (R-Texas) said today in a statement.
Despite a host of well-documented concerns, investors went gaga over Groupon on its first day of public trading. It didn't hurt that the deal leader was only out to raise $700 million by selling 5.5% of available shares -- far less than previous tech IPOs from Google to LinkedIn. Still, as analysts noted, the initial enthusiasm for Groupon has implications for other Web darlings, and their own IPO ambitions.

IBM plans to release Coremetrics Benchmark projections Friday estimating that the number of consumers using mobile devices to purchase products will more than double in November and continue through the 2011 holiday season compared with the prior year. Sales from mobile devices accounted for about 1% in 2009 and nearly 5% in 2010. Mobile will contribute more than 15% to all online retail sales in 2011.
